Public transport in London

For most people travelling around London, the cheapest way to get around is by using an Oyster or contactless payment card. An Oyster card is a smart card you can use instead of paper tickets, available on buses, Tubes, trams, rail, DLR and some river services. Oyster cards and contactless can also be used on the IFC Cloud Cable Car in East London but has higher fares than other modes like the Tube or buses. Tube map can be found here Tube map

Further information on contactless payments can be found on TfL’s website

Walking and Cycling

You will notice that London loves to cycle.

f you’re based in the capital and want to get into cycling, you may have heard many horror stories about cycling in Central London. There is a risk of injury any time you cycle on the road and it is true that in London, that risk is greater than in many parts of the country – but in real terms, cycling in London is statistically very safe. The vast majority of Central London has a speed limit of 20mph. Riding a bike in London simply requires you to be that bit more vigilant. Cycling to work in London is a great way to save money and avoid the crowded Tube.

What’s more, London is a pretty flat city, so it’s relatively easy to get around by bike, regardless of your fitness levels. London is also catering more and more to cyclists, thanks to the creation of new lanes and segregated routes

TfL and Walk London offer free guided walks led by experienced guides. These can be booked on the Walk London website. The TfL website also has information about walking in London, including their Walking Tube maps.

You can hire a Santander Cycle. Just go to any docking station with your bank card and touch the screen to get started. If you hire a bicycle regularly you can register for cycle membership.

The TfL website also contains information for cyclists including free route maps and cycle guides.
